Local feasts and traditions

Semana Santa in Malaga

Malaga normally is already a lively city where there are things to do every day. But like every Spanish city it also has its feasts and festivals. In Mlaga the people have many of the same celebrations as villages and cities along the Costa del Sol.

The two main celebrations are the Semana Santa, celebrated throughout Spain, the other one is Feria de Agosto (August Fair). But there are many other traditional festivities, which are mostly just celebrated by locals.

Malaga had a long tradition of carnivals, but for several reasons carnival was not held for a long period of time. These days carnival is celebrated, but is not in the great it used to be. Carnival is a good way of interacting with the local people.

The Holy Week (Semana Santa) is probably the best know and most celebrated festivity in Spain, many foreigners and tourist visit the celebrations in Malaga. In this city it is largely celebrated.

The Feria de Agosto, August Fair, is another event that attracts a lot of people from outside the city. The origin of the fair is in the surrendering to the Catholics in 1487. These days it is not so much a classical feast, but more an international summer festival, that attracts people from all around.

Another festival in the summer, middle of June, is the Virgen de la Carmen, a celebration in honour of the patroness of the fishermen. This celebration is on the 16th of July and can be seen throughout the towns on the Costa del Sol.

Malaga is the centre of the Costa del Sol, every international or Spanish dish can be found here. Typical local dishes are mixed with products from the inland and seafood. Typical Mlaga is the cold soups, ajoblanco and gazpacho, especially ajoblanco is typical for this city. Pescaíto Frito is another famous local speciality, this is fried fish. The fried fish can vary from calamares to anchovies and can be found in throughout the city.
