Mijas has a large foreign population, mostly from the UK, but also Germans, Dutch and many other nationalities. This also one of the reasons Mijas offers a lot, from golfing to large shopping centre and good possibilities for going out. Even though now lot foreigners live in Mijas, it has still managed to keep its typical Andalusian character, with its many picturesque streets and squares in the old part of the town. A few places that make Mijas typically are the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Pea, Carvalo or the oval structured bullring.
Because the village is build up against the hills it is divided in different levels, these levels are linked to each other by small typical streets, and each level is ensured of a characteristic view of the surroundings. But probably the best way to get a good panorama is from the church near the park.
It is easy to travel from Mijas to other places in the Costa del Sol. There is a highway nearby and Malaga, the biggest city in de region is only 28 kilometres away.
